GEORGE TOWN: All indications point at DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh to take over as Bukit Gelugor member of parliament, from his late father Karpal Singh.
Checks showed that Ramkarpal had secured the majority of votes at all 17 polling stations.
With voter turnout at 56 per cent, one of the lowest in an election in the country, speculation is rife that the three other candidates--Parti Cinta Malaysia's Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, and independent candidates Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan--will lose their deposits.
By law, candidates must secure one-eighth of the total turnout to reclaim their RM10,000 candidacy deposit.
In the last general election, Karpal won big with a majority 41,778 votes, or 79 per of the total turnout.
